Journalist Allen Salkin visited Muse to talk about his new book “From Scratch: Inside the Food Network,” out in October from G.P. Putnam’s Sons. We relished anecdotes from the network’s scrappy, low-budget founding, including who discovered “Iron Chef.” We feasted on gossip about the talent — why Julia Child couldn’t cook on the channel, how the network discovered Giada De Laurentiis. And we offered Salkin a chocolate-chip cookie, since it was one made “from scratch” by a friend’s mom that got him cooking.
